Hi there—ready for a Busan bus luggage update? Good Dayhere!
Packing for a trip is always exciting, but hauling a heavy suitcase onto public transportation? That can leave you wondering whether you—and your luggage—are taking up too much space.
A few years ago, I tried to board a bus with my suitcase, not realizing it wasn’t allowed, and was stopped from getting on.
With my flight getting closer, I was flustered and scrambling to figure out what to do. I ended up calling a taxi to the airport.
All I could think was: Why can’t I bring a suitcase on the bus? Are international travelers supposed to rely entirely on the subway? And what about places the subway doesn’t reach?
So I was thrilled to hear that Busan’s pilot program—the first in South Korea to allow large suitcases on city buses—is finally moving toward regular service! The official launch is now on the horizon.
If you’re planning a trip to Busan, South Korea, this is news worth knowing. Let me walk you through what’s changing.
Busan Bus Luggage Rules:
What’s Changing?
1. From a Successful Nine-Month Pilot to Regular Service
Since April, Busan has been running South Korea’s first pilot program allowing suitcases up to 30 inches on city buses. Originally scheduled to end in June, the trial was extended through December to give the city more time to evaluate the results. The plan is to revise the city bus conditions of carriage by year-end and launch regular service on January 1 next year. That’s the planned official start date!
During roughly six months of operation, there wasn’t a single on-site safety incident of the kind officials had worried about. Complaints submitted through e-People, the national public petition portal, were also low, at just one or two per month. Those results suggest both genuine demand and a solid safety record.
2. Which Bus Routes Are Included? Routes 85 and 307
Two routes currently allow large suitcases and are set to make the policy permanent.
-
Bus 85 (Yuhan Yeogaek): This route serves major sightseeing areas, including Huinnyeoul Culture Village in Yeongdo-gu, Busan Station in Dong-gu, and Seomyeon and Jeonpo-dong in Busanjin-gu. Large suitcases are allowed during off-peak hours and must be secured to the designated luggage fixture.
-
Bus 307 (Ilgwang Yeogaek): This airport route connects Gimhae International Airport with Centum City, Haeundae, and Songjeong. An analysis of ridership in July and August found that an average of about 45 passengers a day boarded with suitcases—a strong response from airport travelers. On this route, large suitcases are allowed at all times, and passengers are responsible for looking after their own bags.
3. Can You Bring a Large Suitcase on Every Bus? What to Know
This doesn’t mean you can board every city bus in Busan with a large suitcase.
On crowded routes or routes with lots of curves—particularly buses passing through the Gwangalli area—safety concerns and inconvenience to other passengers make it difficult to allow large luggage.
With that in mind, Busan is actively considering introducing a separate luggage-friendly routeconnecting major tourist attractions in the first half of next year. The city is also exploring buses with luggage storage built in during manufacturing.
Essential Safety Rules for Bringing Luggage on Board
-
Wheelchair users have priority in the designated space. Move your suitcase immediately if a wheelchair user boards.
-
Keep aisles, doors, and emergency access routes clear.
-
Hold on to your suitcase while the bus is moving, and keep it under your control.
-
Always follow the driver’s or other bus staff’s instructions.
